Customer Reviews for  'Headlight with 6 Leds'

Red is first now
I purchased this locally in 12/2008 and it appears Energizer has listened to feedback and has updated this model somewhat. My model is HDL33A2E. The headlight is pretty much as others have said EXCEPT the red light is now FIRST in the sequence of light modes. So night vision is not destroyed ... that is, at least not until you turn it off because you still have to cycle through all the modes then. And the button is STILL hard to press, which makes having to go through all the cycles to turn it off even more irritating and actually a little painful.

Great Light - Highly Recommend
I purchased one of these about a year ago. I love having light without tying up my hands or in some cases my mouth. The light is bright, doesn't burn through batteries and is easy to use. I have strapped it onto my youngest (18 months) son's head during a power outage, he didn't miss a beat. On the floodlight setting it outperformed my led lanterns during another power outage. I just set it on top of my hutch and went about my business. I have used this for outdoor projects in place of my 1000 watt halogen flood lights. While it is not as bright the spotlight is always right where you need it. I also don't have to worry about blocking out my light. The pivoting head is also handy for reading or carrying on conversations without blinding your friends.

The only complaint I've heard was from my mother in law who had trouble with the switch. It does take a bit of pressure to change the settings. If that would be a problem for you Energizer's 3 LED headlamp might be a better fit. It is less expensive and not quite as versatile but still a great light and it has a slide switch. The main difference is that the 3 LED model only has two settings white (kind of a flood/spot mix) and red to allow for better retention of night vision. The 6 LED version has four settings: spot (2LED), flood(2LED), spot/flood (4LED uses batteries faster), and red(2LED). I liked the 3 LED version enough to get one for each of my six kids. They love them and we've even used them on bike rides when we have been caught out too late.

To summarize: These are great, versatile lights, that are bright, allow hands free operation, are light weight, conserve batteries, and are simple enough for a child to use.

Cheap, yet excellent headlamp for mulitiple occasions
My brother purchased this headlamp for me about 2 years ago for a backpacking trip. When I got it, I thought because Energizer isn't exactly known for their headlamps, that it wouldn't be very good, but I am proven wrong.

I'll start with the negative first:
With a single button to cycle through the four modes, I find it inconvenient to have to cycle THROUGH the three white (and brightest) settings to get to the red night-mode. This is surprisingly bothersome when getting out of the tent at night, as I have to cover the light for the first three clicks. Also, the button is somewhat stiff and (I know, I'm picky) makes a "loud" clicking noise. Some may think this isn't a big deal, but when you're trying not to wake your brother during a dead-silent sleep in a tent in the wild, it can be somewhat annoying. On another note, the light fixture sticks a good 1.5 inches off of your head, which some may find bothersome or unfashionable, but when you're walking the trails, nobody cares; I've never worried about it's size/look.

Now, on to the positive:
Like I mentioned before, this Energizer headlamp really blew me away at its low price, yet outstanding performance. With the spot beam (two centered LEDs) I am able to see long distances down the trail or across camp to find something. The flood (two outermost LEDs) works great for general around-camp usage and lighting up late evening trails when it's still a little bright out, but you need a little light, too. The maximum setting (all four white LEDs) is ideal for jogging down the trail to get to the tent (and away from the mosquitoes) in a hurry. The night-vision mode (two semi-center red LEDs), as some may call it, is perfect for in the tent at night or early in the morning before heading out. All four modes have their situations, and I use them all equally.
The three AAA batteries fit on the back of the light fixture that fits nicely onto your forehead thanks to strip of soft, almost gel-like material. Surprisingly, I haven't had to replace the batteries yet.

The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars was because of the minor aforementioned negatives.

All in all, I absolutely love this headlamp, and would strongly recommend it to anybody for a plethora of uses around the house, or in the wild.
Thanks!

OK, but has some drawbacks
This provides plenty of light, but there are some drawbacks.
Drawback #1: This thing has four modes... White Spotlight, White Floodlight, White Spot and Flood, Red, and OFF. The selection is made by pressing one switch over and over. This is a pain, especially since the switch is small and rather stiff. With gloves on it's almost impossible. It also means that to get to the night vision friendly RED you've got to step through 3 WHITE settings.
Drawback #2: The LED's are not recessed and don't have reflectors to direct the light forward. I wear glasses and the stray light hits my glasses and makes it tough to see.

Before I purchased the 6 LED model I had the 3 LED model. Other than not beeing as bright, it is a better design because it has a 3 position slider switch...center OFF, left RED, right WHITE. That's it. Also, the LED's are recessed a bit and don't through nearly as much light into my face as this 6 LED model did.
Note that I just saw a new Energizer head lamp that seems to fix the stray light problem. It has a high power LED with reflector for the spot light, the but unit looked rather bulky, especially compared to the original 3 LED unit. Unfortunately, appeared that it has the same crappy push-button switch design as this one.

Awesome light
I initally purchased this light for myself; however, I use it on the dog more. It is great to put it in red mode when I go out with the dog at night. You can see everywhere he is roaming. I just put it around his neck like a collar and point it downward. It doesn't bother him at all and lets me know where he is at all times. Geez, it gets dark before 6pm now-a-days. It's the only sure way to keep up with him. I have yet to change the batteries and have had it almost 1 year. I use it for about 30 minutes a day.
