Customer Reviews for  'Merkur Futur Adjustable Double Edge Safety Razor'

A great shave!
I've been shaving with DE safety razors for about a year after that 5 bladed monstrosity came out. My first razor was a simple Merkur- quite light but able enough but I was itching to try an adjustable. I got the Futur for Christmas. The first day I mascaraed myself. I thought it was my technique as this razor is far heavier than my last one, I thought I was using way too much pressure (let the razor do the work). Over the next few days I wasn't killing myself but the shaves were just painful. Turns out there was something wrong with the blade that came with it. I replaced it with a fresh blade from my existing stock (same brand, Merkur Platinum) and it made all the difference in the world. Still trying to find the right balance on the setting but wow, this thing delivers an incredibly close shave (currently using a setting of 3).

My only complaint about the razor is how the blades are changed with the snap-off cover. I just worry that over the years, the cover will stop fitting securely and I'll end up with a wobbly blade.

As a side note, I have of late noticed some quality issues with the Merkur blades. Perhaps one out of twenty seem to have some manufacturing defect that causes some pretty bad nicks and just an uncomfortable shave.. the next one in the pack always works just fine.

My first double edge safety razor and I love it!
This is my first double edge safety razor. I have had a difficult time shaving ever since I began growing a beard. I get razor rash, razor burn and irritation like you wouldn't believe. I've tried dry shaving, shaving before I shower, shaving after I shower, etc, etc. I've tried electric razors, disposable razors, 3 blade, 4 blade and even 5 blade razors.

Nothing, and I mean nothing has given me a shave like my Merkur Futur. I no longer suffer from razor burn, rash or irritation. You have no idea how much this has improved my life. I work outdoors at night in cold weather and nothing is worse than a cold face with razor burn. It is so irritating. That discomfort has now been eliminated thanks to my double edge razor.

If this is your first double edge razor I strongly recommed it, however, don't think you're going to be able to get a perfect shave right out of the box. This type of razor takes a few months to perfect and it brings quite a few nicks with it but once you get the hang of it nothing can beat it. [...]

If you buy this razor be patient with it and start on the 1st setting. I believe it has a total of 6 settings. I've been using for ten months now and I'm still on the 1st setting but my shave is so close I don't see any need to go further.

Just buy it Man!!!
I had been shaving for about 20 years and finally come to the conclusion that I did not know what the hell I was doing. I have spent most of that time using an electric razor Panasonic and Braun.

I found that the Panasonic gave me the best shaves because I could wet shave with it; unknowingly I had stumbled upon the secret of shaving - wetness. Of course It took about 8 years to realize this. So upon stumbling into an old Schick FX in my medicine closet (that I must have gotten free somewhere years ago) about 2 months ago, I gave it a shot (because my Braun just sucks overall) and bless my soul, it was not bad! So I figured a newer model would just be the bomb so I hit Theeasystore.

That is where I discovered DE shaving. I absorbed all I could over a 3 day period and I just had to give it a shot. I ordered a Merkur 38c used it a few times and It was ok.

That was when i said "screw it" I am going to order a the most maligned DE razor on the internet; the dreaded Merkur Futur.

I do not know what those people were complaining about it is just AWESOME for me! It is well balanced, it is easy to handle, just keep the shave cream off your shaving hand dude! I just use both hands. Technique is the most important part of using any DE shaver, go online and study those youtube vids. They will really help you develop your own style, for your face.

In my short DE experience it has delivered the best shaves of my lifetime. I use it with Derby's, not too happy with the Merkur blades, my setting right now is 1. Yes 1.

I do not hesitate to recommend this Razor to anyone that will take time to develop good shaving technique.

Just remember there are many other factors that contribute to a good shave, not just the razor.

I encourage FNG's to embrace the whole shaving experience; which is very therapeutic for me now, it improves my day.

In the "Nick" of Time
I have become more and more disappointed in the ransom I have to pay for Mach III blades. The shave was good, but not extraordinary. I found the Futur razor after getting the notion that I should give double-edged safety razors a try. My Dad used a double edge and I don't really know why that practice has been lost.

I bought the Futur and 30 Merkur blades, a badger brush and a tube of the Poraso soap from Perect Beauty/Theeasystore. I didn't shave the morning I expected the package to arrive so I had a nice bit of sandpaper by the afternoon when the razor arrived. Time to get to work.

I have a coarse beard and an angular face with a cleft chin. I was worried about carving myself up based on other reviews. I took a shower (and my time) and had a very good shave on setting `1' with no nicks at all. Going slow and being careful is the trick and I got a better shave on the least-aggressive setting than I ever did with the Mach III. I have also bloodied myself pretty good with the Mach III, including a permanent scar on the bottom of my left `cleft' where I flattened the curve with that razor. That cut didn't even stop bleeding with a Band-Aid; I had to use gauze and tape. Speed was a factor there.

As of this writing I have had the razor just over a month. I am using a setting of `3' on my cheeks and neck and `2' under my nose and on my chin. The head of the Futur is indeed big but not noticeably bigger than the Mach III. Warning, though: don't keep going over and over an area trying to `perfect' the shave. If you don't get it in three passes MOVE ON. I seem to have pretty tough skin but I gave myself a case of razor-burn under my nose that was painful and very obvious. I looked like I had a first-degree burn under my nose and I haven't made that mistake since.

The shave is excellent. My wife has commented several times on the quality of the shave. I typically have a `five o'clock shadow' at about 3pm: now I look shaven right to bed time. The next morning I have a beard but not nearly the heavy beard I had with the Mach III. I wish I had had this razor prior to a few job interviews over the years. I am now getting the best shave I've ever had.

As others have said, use a light touch and let the razor do the work. The trick I use is to hold the razor lightly near the head with my thumb and forefinger and let the razor follow the curves by itself in short passes. My pinky finger rests lightly on the hilt. The few times I've nicked myself I had let my hand slip into a hammer-grip.

Blade changing isn't a problem if the razor and your hands are dry. If my hand was wet and soapy and I tried to pry the guard off the blade I could envision slipping and cutting my hand. I shave in either a robe or a towel around my waist so I just wipe dry my hands and the razor on the robe or towel and change the blade. Another warning: be sure to push the guard fully on! I must have failed to do so and gave myself a couple of nasty nicks on my face and neck. Visually everything looked OK but taking the guard off and snapping it back on (hard!) solved the problem.

The quality of the razor itself is excellent: it is well-fitted with large sturdy-looking parts. I am very happy I bought this razor and will be using it from now on.

For experts only
While Merkur has an incredible reputation among wet shavers, this model isn't very good in use.

You paid a lot of money and got a beautiful work of sculpture. Five stars, no question.

But especially for newbies, it has glaring faults. First, it is too heavy. Imagine using a one-pound block of steel with a samurai-sharp edge to shave your face. That's what it feels like. You must be quite experienced to tame this razor.

Then too it is too big -- good luck with shaving your upper lip. Remember maneuvering that new 5-blade Gillette razor on your lip? Same idea.

Finally, the German designers seem to have forgotten this carries a sharp blade. The top unsnaps from both sides. No twist to open. Be careful. And, whatever you do, adjust the closeness setting -- admittedly Mercedes precise -- without a blade in the thing. My inclination in adjusting the razor is to rotate the head with my hand. Oops. Very dangerous.

The Merkur Hefty Classic or HD is far better designed and far safer till you're an experienced double-edge blade shaver.
